About the event
Black Umfolosi – Workshops & Evening Concert
The world-famous a cappella and dance group Black Umfolosi make a long-awaited return to the UK — and this time, you can do more than just watch… you can be part of it.
Their performances are rooted in the traditional song and dance of southern Africa, delivered with a beauty, energy and warmth that is completely captivating. Expect rich vocal harmonies, intricate rhythms, and powerful choreography — from gentle, soulful moments to vibrant stomping, leaping and their much-loved Gumboot Dance, a crowd-pleasing highlight inspired by the South African mining communities.
Formed in 1982 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and named after the Umfolozi Omnyama River, the group have become one of Zimbabwe’s greatest cultural ambassadors, touring internationally and building a loyal following across the UK. Their ability to connect with audiences — through both music and storytelling — is what makes them truly unforgettable. Take Part – Afternoon Workshops
Before the evening performance, join us for a hands-on workshop experience designed for all ages and abilities.
Across two back-to-back sessions, you’ll first dive into dance, learning authentic movements and rhythms in a relaxed and supportive environment. Then, you’ll move into singing, exploring powerful group harmonies and traditional call-and-response songs.
No experience is needed — just a willingness to join in. These workshops are uplifting, inclusive, and genuinely joyful.
Throughout the sessions, the group also share stories about their lives and culture, offering a deeper understanding of the music and traditions you’re experiencing.
